Trivia: Umihotaru means "sea firefly". I thought there was no such things as sea fireflies but I'm surprised to learn there IS actually such things! I thought they just made up the word because it sounds comfortably nice and gentle to our ear. However it’s a funny thing that when it’s translated into English, such soft and gentle touch suddenly disappears. I think it’s the word “hotaru” that has a magic power. It has such a delicate warm feeling in it and there are some parents who name their baby girl "Hotaru" too.
By the way have you seen a movie called “Grave of the Fireflies”? I’ve felt it for a long time that something is missing in the English title. While it’s been perfectly translated from the original title, I can’t find such warmth or softness in the word “firefly” anywhere like I can in the word “hotaru”. When I hear the word “firefly” all I can think of is “It’s an insect!” That’s all. Maybe because I'm a Japanese but If you are a native English speaker, what do you think? Does the word “firefly” give you the similar feeling?
Anyway when I heard the original title, I felt such strong impact in it. Because all the warmth, softness and gentleness were combined with the dark and cold word “grave”. Had it been written in Hiragana or Katakana, the impact would have been even greater. But it was actually written in Kanji. Since many people are not used to see the word “hotaru” in Kanji so it took a little while for me to realize it’s THE hotaru. I wonder if there is some reason or intentions hidden somewhere why they chose Kanji instead of Hiragana or Katakana. Hmmm...
