Removing a seized shear pin
Removing a seized shear pin from my Old Town PDL drive and suggested maintenance for all electric motors. I contacted Johnson Outdoors through email asking how to get a stuck prop pin out of the shaft. They responded quickly with these instructions
"Thanks for the email and info. It’s a good idea to clean and rinse behind the prop to ensure there is minimal salt built up in and around the prop/pin/shaft. We suggested that you try and push that out with a punch tool of the correct size using a hammer and lightly tapping. A punch set should be available at any hardware or Lowes/Home Depot type store. Harbor Freight had several on their website, below.
***The pin diameter is 1/8”. So a 1/8” punch tool would be the one to try. In addition we would suggest using a “penetrating oil”, WD-40, or similar to try to break the strength of the rust before punching it out.
If it’s rusted and the punch does not work, you may need to drill it out with a bit that fits inside the hole. Probably need to be a case hardened drill bit. Hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions."
