Various methods for identifying whether your ammo is steel core or not.  The magnet test is not an accurate method.  Pulling a bullet for inspection appears to be the most informative.  You can often tell if it is steel core based upon the length of the projectile and by inspecting its base.  Military surplus and much commerical 7.62x39 ammunition is often steel case, not brass.  Steel case should not be confused as steel core.  Steel core ammo has a steel penetrating core embedded in the projectile, this is revealed as the softer jacket and surrounding lead is stripped away upon impact as compared to lead core ammo which smooshes up.  This video shows bullet cross sections that reveal the composition of steel core ammo.  Images are compliments of K. Gross.  Steel core ammo often just contains a mild steel core that should not be considered armor piercing.  AP and API ammo has a hardened penetrator often made of molybdenum or tungsten which is much harder than most steel and armor targets.  Steel core an AP ammo is available for most calibers including 7.62x39, 308, 30-06, 223, etc.  Steel core ammo is often not indicated in the same method as AP which is often color coded with a black or green tip on the bullet itself.  A lot of steel core ammo is old and corrosive.  Clean your firearm / weapon after shooting.  Check the your state statutes to determine if steel core or AP ammo is legal in your area.  Be Safe!
