In 2017, the Cologne Male Voice Choir (Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein, KMGV) celebrated its 175 year anniversary. It was founded in 1842 to raise money to continue building the Cologne Cathedral, a purpose shared with the Zentral-Dombau-Verein (ZDV) that was established at the same time. The anniversary concert on June 24, 2017 was a joint celebration of ZDV and KMGV.
"Am Dom zo Kölle" was written in 1948 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the laying of the Cologne Cathedral's foundation stone. With its reveling music and vernacular lyrics it has become a beloved Cologne classic.
