Join us on this enlightening journey to uncover the lessons and wisdom contained in this remarkable chapter of the Quran. Key milestone of the historical events: 1. The Fall of the Himyarite Kingdom: After the Jewish king Dhu-Nuwas persecuted Christians in Yemen, the Christian Abyssinian army, supported by the Byzantine Empire, invaded Yemen around 525 AD, ending the Himyarite rule and establishing Abyssinian control. 2. Abrahah's Rise to Power: Abrahah, one of the Abyssinian commanders, became the ruler of Yemen after a duel with his fellow commander, Aryat. He aimed to spread Christianity across the Arab lands and to control the lucrative trade routes dominated by the Quraish in Makkah. 3. The Construction of al-Qalis: To divert the pilgrimage from Makkah to Yemen, Abrahah built a grand cathedral in Sana’a, called al-Qalis, intending to replace the Kaaba as the central place of worship in the Arabian Peninsula. 4. Desecration of al-Qalis: In response to Abrahah's efforts, some young men from the Quraish desecrated the cathedral, providing Abrahah with a pretext to invade Makkah and destroy the Kaaba. 5. The Elephant Army's Defeat: In around 570 AD, Abrahah led an army of 60,000 men and several elephants towards Makkah. However, his lead elephant, Mahmud, refused to advance towards the city, and the army was destroyed by divine intervention, as described in Surah al-Fil.
