In this video, we are going to reveal the secrets of glass, from its discovery, which is believed to have occurred around 3500 years before Christ, to the technological advances that have revolutionized its production over the centuries. The first traces of glass were found in ancient Egypt and ancient Mesopotamia, and the rudimentary technique used was the molding and blowing of glass in various objects, amulets and small decorative pieces.

Over time, glass production and working techniques have been improved. The Phoenicians, people who inhabited the region of present-day Lebanon, Syria and Israel in ancient times, played a key role in the development of the glass industry, introducing and improving the blown glass technique. This method allows for the creation of larger, more complex containers, such as bottles, glasses, and goblets.

As for the glass manufacturing process, it involves a series of steps that may vary depending on the type of glass to be produced. However, in this video, we are going to focus on the basic process of making common glass, known as silica glass or soda-lime glass. This variety of glass is generally produced from three main raw materials: silica sand, sodium carbonate, and calcium carbonate.

We will walk you through the manufacturing process step by step, from melting the ingredients in a high temperature oven to molding the molten glass into different shapes using techniques such as blow molding, press molding or float molding. In addition, let's find out how glass is cooled and what additional processes can be carried out to improve its appearance and functionality.

Throughout the video, we'll also explore interesting facts about glass, such as the fact that, at the atomic level, it behaves like a gel, never reaching a fully solid stage.
