In 1987, he showed up unannounced at Buck Owens’ office and convinced him to do a record.
Buck hadn’t had a hit in years– but “The Streets of Bakersfield” was a smash. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, he disappeared from music, simply nowhere to be found.
In 2006, he briefly emerged from the shadows to perform at Buck Owens’ funeral. He seemed like an entirely different man.
