With a government shutdown looking increasingly possible, the capacity to process an influx of migrants at the southern border could become a major concern for the Biden administration. Unauthorized crossings into the U.S. have hit levels not seen since last spring. In response, the mayor of the border town Eagle Pass is extending the city’s emergency disaster declaration after more than 4,000 migrants crossed into Texas in two days. Muzaffar Chishti, a senior fellow at the Migration Policy Institute, speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about the humanitarian and political crisis the country is facing as a result of the influx.
