Perform complex mesh cuts in seconds by learning about Blender's Boolean modifier.

As a 3D modeling program, Blender is a fantastic tool and comes with a variety of features that help ease the modeling process. One of these features, modifiers, allows us to temporarily or permanently "modify" meshes in specific, useful ways that are common in many 3D modeling workflows. This includes items such as mirroring meshes across specific axes, decimating polygons to bring down a mesh's overall poly account, smoothing meshes (i.e. subsurface), and more.

The Boolean modifier is one of Blender's options available that is focused on quick-cutting techniques. With this modifier, you're able to take two separate meshes, overlap them, and use the edges of where they contact to cut a specific shape. For example, with this modifier, you can quickly cut a circle shape into a square mesh - saving you tons of time in the mesh editing department.

In this short tutorial, we'll show you the foundations of using the Boolean modifier. You'll learn both how to apply the modifier with two simple meshes, but also learn what some of the settings available do.

With this knowledge, you'll be able to incorporate a new, very common technique into your 3D art workflow. Not only will this make your overall production in Blender more efficient, but give you more tools to express yourself. These models can also be used for a variety of projects, including games, VR & AR experiences, 3D web displays, and 3D art portfolios.

These techniques are also not limited to simple primitives. You can use any number of complex meshes with the Boolean modifier, allowing you to get just the right shapes you need to create cuts of.

While this tutorial does assume some basic familiarity with Blender, any beginner can learn to upgrade their skills!
