Diamond color is graded on a scale starting from ‘D’ to ‘Z’, followed by the GIA grading system.  ‘D’ is considered the highest rating and means there is no presence of color or hue within the stone.
When diamonds form in the earth’s surface they are made of carbon atoms and sometimes traces of nitrogen get inside causing it to get discolored.  For our purposes and based on what we sell for engagement ring center-stones we will focus on the colorless and near colorless range.
In this video we discuss the following topics with real life examples to help you visualize everything better:
- Colorless Diamonds: these are diamonds graded in the 'D' to 'F' color range
- Near Colorless Diamonds: these diamonds are graded in the 'G' to 'J' range
- Colorless VS Near Colorless Diamonds: Sometimes the differences will be less obvious than others
- Different Shapes exhibit color differently:  For instance a round brilliant, emerald cut (and asscher) and cushion brilliant style hide color better than others so you can be more flexible and opt for ‘H-J’ color without hesitation in most cases.  On the other hand there are certain shapes where you should be more cognizant of color such as Ovals, Pears and sometimes Radiants.
