THE ISLAND OF HYDRA - THE PEARL OF THE SARONIC ISLANDS.

Hydra is one of the most interesting islands belonging to the Saronic Islands archipelago. It is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. It is characterized by a small number of roads, consequently,  the lack of motor vehicles. The main means of transport are donkeys.

DONKEYS AND THE BAN ON VEHICLES

There is practically no traffic on the island- there are no cars or even bicycles. Traffic is limited to ambulances, garbage trucks and a few vans carrying heavy building materials. The reason for this is not the ecological commitment of local residents or keeping "donkeys" as a typical lure for tourists, but most of all it is a traditional form of transport , which is possible to be used here.
Almost all the steep streets climb up the slopes with stairs or unpaved paths, so pack animals such as horses and donkeys are still used here for transport. The view   of donkeys and horses in the main port is intrinsically typical for the island. Donkeys are parked like cars. They help the residents to provide supplies to less accessible places on the island They are also used in reaching the guesthouse or exploring the island on their backs. If you do not approve of the way the animals are used here as a means of transport but you want to visit the island,  you should do it on our own feet.

FORMER SEA POWER AND TODAY'S FASHION ISLAND

It is hard to believe that the island with its 3,000 inhabitants was in earlier centuries inhabited by as many as 20 thousand. people. Today, little is left of its bustling economic and maritime power. Hydra has become an oasis of peace - an escape from the city noise and mass tourism. Once forgotten, the island was rediscovered in the 1960s. It became famous again thanks to celebrities.
It was them who successfully promoted the island, which became a tourist destination for even the greatest stars and art lovers. Athens branch of the Academy of Fine Arts was established here, as a result of which you can meet adepts of the art: painters and cartoonists in the narrow streets adjacent to the port. It is here that many films were recorded with actors such as Sofia Loren. The  famous Canadian singer Leonard Cohen took a liking to the island. He created most of his works here, and finally even decided to live her. His family also visits the island every year.
Despite the fact that the island became very popular, the Greeks did not allow it to be made a great resort, thanks to which Hydra retained its unique character.

NO DRINKING WATER AND BEACHING

The name of the island is associated with water, which makes it hard to believe that Hydra does not even have one natural source of it. But don't panic - water is brought to the island via a pipeline from the Peloponnese.

Hydra is not a destination for die-hard sunbathers. There are no wide or long beaches here, but if you fancy swimming in the water or catching the sun's rays, there are several coves on the edge of the port town that you can easily reach on foot. There are also water taxis that can take you to beaches and bays in more remote areas of Hydra.

HOW TO GET ON HYDRA?

There are several options to get to Hydra:
• the easiest one is to buy a one-day ferry trip from the capital of Greece - Athens. Then you have the opportunity to see two more Greek islands: Poros and Aegina and with this option everything is organized for you, including  a buffet lunch on the ferry and sometimes a Greek dance show with music.
• buy a ferry or a hydrofoil on your own from the port in Piraeus near Athens- the price of such a trip is EUR 28 one way, depending on the line and speed of the ferry, such transport takes about two hours.
• the last option is to rent your car to the southern Peloponnese to the village of Metochi and cross by ferry for EUR 6.5 one way, directly to the port of Hydra in approximately 25 minutes.

Hydra is the perfect destination for a short break from Athens. Tourists come to the island mainly for a day trip. The island does not have much to offer to an average holiday maker. As a result, a lot of people come here for a few days and go on. However, it is a perfect place for those who love this "nothingness", peace, sitting in cafes all day long and staring at the waves at sea.
