1. Flehmen Response
Before mating, a male giraffe will perform a behavior called the "Flehmen response". The male nudges the female's rear end to induce urination, and then he tastes the urine to determine if the female is in estrus, or fertile.

2. Nonchalant Mating
Mating is a quick and nonchalant affair for giraffes. The act lasts only a few seconds and is often performed without any noticeable foreplay or courtship behavior.

3. Long Gestation Period
Female giraffes have one of the longest gestation periods in the animal kingdom, at about 15 months. This long pregnancy period results in a single calf that is born well developed, which is necessary since they must be able to stand and run shortly after birth to avoid predators.

4. Polygamous Nature
Giraffes are polygamous animals. This means that one male will often mate with several females.

5. Necking Battles
Males often fight for the right to mate with a fertile female. These fights, known as "necking", involve the males swinging their necks to strike at each other. The force of these blows can be so powerful that they sometimes knock an opponent out or even kill them.

6. Infanticide
Surprisingly, male giraffes are known to commit infanticide on occasion. This behavior is typically seen when a new male takes over a group and kills off the offspring of his predecessor. This act hastens the return to fertility in the females, allowing the new dominant male to father his own offspring more quickly.
