I prune our pomegranate tree in 3 main ways in Winter.  This will make the tree spend more energy on fruit making the next year.  Prunning should be done when the tree and the buds are sleep.  It is also easy to see the over grown branches and get an idea for the shape of the tree.  One pruning is on the disorganized branches that stick out of the shape of the tree.   These will get too bushy and clutter the tree.  The second pruning is the branches going upright too high over the tree.  The pomegranate tree would want to grow bigger and taller, but it is best to keep it to the level that you want and prevent it from getting out of control.  I use a tree cutter that reaches up and conveniently trims the vertical branches.  This trimming also keeps the umbrella shape for the tree.  The last pruning type is the removal of new shoots out of the roots.  These shoots will develop into new trunks, but we already have and keep only 2-3 trunks at most.  Major new growth out of the roots will only take too much energy out of the tree and reduce fruit quality and quantity.
I use shears and a tree cutter for pruning.  This year, I will use the saw also to reduce one trunk and some major branches.  I need to trim the tree to reduce the shade in the Greene's box garden space that we have.  Pomegranates are great antioxidant fruits, and they grow well in warm places.  Pomegranate is a fast-growing tree, and with good pruning will produce both beautiful fruit and a beautiful tree.  Thank you for visiting my garden today.  Be sure to check out the harvest of pomegranates (Video 51) and other videos from our small-space garden.
