This male gorilla is about 11 years old, sexually mature, with large canine teeth as in the silverbacks, but without a prominent sagittal crest like his father. He's a blackback gorilla. Although he left his birth family several months ago, he has not yet had the opportunity to establish his own troupe by attracting emigrating females.
He is very cool with his reflection. He looks straight in the eyes at his image, while his father, who did not learn in the mirror, thinks he sees in his reflection a stranger, an intruder and as a peacefull primate, he only looks at him from the corner of his eye to avoid defying this stranger (look straight into the eyes between two silver backs = a war declaration).
The faces he makes when looking in the mirror and his repeated checking of his teeth and tongue suggest that he has completed his apprenticeship in the mirror and has recognized himself in the mirror. Such behaviour should be repeated over time to confirm that he has figured out that he was looking at himself.
The rolled-lip face with the lips rolled upside down, the upper lip to the nostrils, the lower lip to the chin either one or both lips together. This allows either to expose the upper or lower teeth and gums or all teeth and gums.
Kisses of his reflection with open mouth and kisses with tongue (French Kiss) are behaviors that are common among chimpanzees. They have a goal of reconciliation after a quarrel but what do they correspond to in this blackback? And the helical swirling of the tongue with the mouth open what can it mean?

Les grimaces qu’il fait en se regardant dans le miroir et son auscultation répétée des ses dents et de sa langue laissent penser qu’il a achevé son apprentissage au miroir et qu’il se soit reconnu dans le miroir. Il conviendra que de tels comportements soient répétés dans le temps pour confirmer sa reconnaissance de soi.
