Science for the Public February 08, 2017. David Montgomery, University of Washington, & Anne Bikle. The husband-wife authors discuss their outstanding book, "The Hidden Half of Nature" on how the microbial world sustains the planet and its life. They connect the dots, much of it from their experience in building a vibrant garden and restoring their own health. They explain how a healthy microbial community in the soil nourishes healthy plant life with little or no need for fertilizers or pesticides. The healthy plants, including produce, nourish the microbial community in our gut, which is very much linked to the immune system. And healthy soil is also essential for absorbing CO2, so by restoring our soil and changing from our destructive industrial agricultural practices, we also restore our planet's health and our own.
