Barbara Hale had already been working in the entertainment industry for years before she was offered the role of Della Street on Perry Mason. She almost didn’t take the role, as she was intending to retire soon. Barbara was busy taking care of three kids, and she was happier at home than at the workplace. However, a couple of factors ended up convincing her to sign on to Perry Mason. Two of the producers on the show were Barbara’s old friends, who insisted that the show was only going to run for 18 episodes. There was also the fact of the matter that Barbara was old friends with the man who was set to be it’s titular star.
Raymond Burr was one of the first people that Barbara Hale had met when first arriving in Hollywood. At the time, both stars were signed to RKO Pictures. Barbara ended up agreeing to play the character of Della, but Perry Mason ended up lasting for many more than 18 episodes! The show was a massive hit, staying in production for nearly a decade a yielding well over 300 episodes from 1957 to 1966.
During her time at Perry Mason, Barbara Hale received lots of letters from fans. Many of these letters saw fans ask the actress when her character and Raymond were ever going to hook up on the screen. Not only that, but many also wondered if Barbara and Raymond were an item in real life. As it turns out, the characters of Perry Mason and Della Street were actually prohibited from ever having any explicit romantic interactions.
