Mr. Ng talks about the
Mr. Ng talks about the technology behind the construction of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) underground tunnels. He shared his journey in the tunnelling industry and his idea to automate Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) using AI to increase safety and productivity of the tunneling process.
Ng Hau Wei has 20 years of Civil Contractor experience in large infrastructure project and over 15 years of 60 kilometres tunnel construction experience covering shield and unshielded mechanized tunnelling methods.
He is currently the Deputy Project Director of KVMRT underground project and the lead in driving the Tunnelling Research Programme. His work includes mega construction of the dual-purpose SMART Tunnel in Kuala Lumpur, the interstate Electrified Double Track Project of Peninsular Malaysia and KVMRT, the country’s 1st metro rail and at present time, pushing to complete its 2nd line.
His experience covers dam, rail and road tunnel construction in various geologies, including extreme karst limestone. His most notable achievements are joint development of the world’s first Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine (VD TBM) and the making of the first Autonomous Tunnel Boring Machine (A-TBM).
