Hong Kong is in the midst of its biggest political crisis since the former British colony was handed over to Chinese sovereignty in 1997.

Millions of people have taken to the streets to protest against a controversial extradition amendment that would allow for the transfer of suspects to face trial on the Chinese mainland.

Although the protests have prompted the Hong Kong government to suspend the bill, protesters continue to demand its complete withdrawal.

For many, the demonstrations are not only about the bill, but also defending what makes Hong Kong unique.

This SCMP Film looks at the impact of the protests, from the first major demonstration on June 9 to clashes in Sha Tin on July 14.
