Some notes about the composition as found on
https://www.jazzguitarcomprehensive.com/
Composer: Wayne Shorter
Year: 1964
Origin: Released on the 1966 album Speak No Evil.
Style: Ballad
Form: A-B-A (27 Bars) [9-9-9]
Key: Eb Major
Harmony/Overview: The harmony of the composition is very evocative and unconventional. Although it consists of many unexpected turns, it revolves primarily around the key of Eb Major. The irregularity of having 9 bar sections also helps in providing the composition with a distinct character.
Recordings: This song has been recorded over 80 times. The first recording comes from Wayne Shorter's 1966 release Speak No Evil. It remains a refreshingly modern ballad in the repertoire and continues to be performed and recorded to this day.
JGC Top Picks:
Wayne Shorter, Speak No Evil, 1964
Stan Getz, Live At Monmartre, 1977
Joe Lovano, Flights of Fancy, 2000
