TIMBUKTU! was a 1978 reworking of George Forrest and Robert Wright’s 1953 musical “Kismet,” with lyrics by Wright & Forrest set to classical compositions by Alexander Borodin. This all-black version moved the setting from the Middle East to Saharan Africa and incorporated some some African folk music into the score. Sadly no cast album was ever recorded though a promotional record was released featuring live cuts of star Eartha Kitt as well as performances by Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughn, Johnny Mathis, Della Reese and Isaac Hayes (whose disco rendition of "Stranger In Paradise" was a major hit).
The original production was described as “Ziegfeldian” for its opulence, including lavish costumes designed by Geoffrey Holder (who also directed and choreographed) and sets by Tony Straiges who later designed the original productions of “Into The Woods” and “Sunday in the Park With George.”
Recorded live in performance on September 10th 1978 (Closing Night) directly from the sound system of the Mark Hellinger Theatre.
