In this Chemistry video in Hindi for class 12 we explained the fundamentals of the solid state of matter. This is a topic from the chapter - 'The Solid State' for class 12th from NCERT.

Mostly we are surrounded by solids and they have widely varying properties. These properties are dependent upon the constituent particles of that solid body, the inter-molecular forces acting on them and the order of arrangement of those particles. In this chapter of 'The solid states' we will focus on the order and arrangement of the constituent particles and their influence on the properties of a solid.

When there is a long range order found in the arrangement of the constituent particles, the solid is called crystalline solid. When there is no order or very short range order found in the arrangement of the constituent particles, the solid is called amorphous solid. These have fairly different characteristics due to their difference in structure. Few examples are given below.

Amorphous solids are isotropic in nature, but crystalline solids are anisotropic in nature.
Crystalline solids have sharp melting point, but amorphous solids do not have sharp melting point.
When cut with a sharp edged tool, crystalline solid splits into two pieces and the newly generated surfaces are plain and smooth. But when amorphous solid is cut with a sharp edged tool, it splits into two pieces with irregular surfaces.
Crystalline solids have definite characteristic geometrical shape, but amorphous solids have irregular shape.
