The bee-eaters are a group of non-passerine birds in the family Meropidae, containing three genera and thirty species.
Most species are found in Africa and Asia, with a few in southern Europe, Australia, and New Guinea.
Most probably they are characterized by the color of their plumage.
Male and female plumages are usually similar.
Most species of bee-eaters can reach a length of 27–29 cm (10.6–11.4 in), including the two elongated central tail feathers. Sexes are alike.
Feeding-
As their name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat flying insects, especially bees, wasps, and grasshoppers.
Nesting:
Generally, bee-eater birds build their nest in high mounds.
While most bee-eater species are monogamous, several species live in large colonies, sometimes consisting of over 100 birds.
Time-activity:
The diurnal time-activity patterns of the Small Bee-eater (Merops Orientalis) were studied between 2005 and 2006 in the Nagapattinam District of Southern India. Bee-eaters were observed to spend an average of 52.5% of their daytime scanning, 21.3% feeding, 13.3% flying, 8.8% resting, and 4.1% engaging in preening activities.
