Brazil Animal Rights Gathering: Animal Activism Beyond the South-Southeast Axis (2/2)

The event, held on May 8, 2024, was the second of two gatherings. The Brazil Animal Rights Gathering: Animal Activism Beyond the South-Southeast Axis was organized by Brazilian coordinator Beatriz Cossermelli to promote community building in underserved regions of Brazil and introduce The Pollination Project to animal activists in those regions. This gathering featured Carla Falcão from Campina Grande, a vegan chef and animal advocate with over a decade of activism in various cities in the Northeast of Brazil, and Klebson Silva from Maceió, founder of FADA (Alagoas Front for the Defense of Animals), a direct action and vegan outreach group, and the Circuito Vegano MCZ, a program that advocates for the inclusion of vegan options in restaurants in his city.

Carla Falcão, Campina Grande, “Entrepreneurship, Education, and Antispeciesist Cuisine”

Carla Falcão is a vegan chef and animal advocate with over a decade of involvement in the movement. She has led projects such as “Veganism in Schools” and “Veganism in the Streets,” and organized the Banquetaço Recife in 2019, offering 1,000 vegan meals for free as a protest against the abolition of CONSEA, a food regulatory body in Brazil. Today, Carla owns Tundra, a vegan pub located in Campina Grande, which serves not only as a gastronomic space but also as an animal rights education center, with events such as “Antispeciesist CineClub”, regularly promoting discussions and reflections to the general public.

Klebson Silva, Maceió, “Veganism in the Streets: Art, Activism, and Entrepreneurship”

Klebson is a vegan activist committed to animal defense since 2002. He is a founding member of FADA (Alagoas Front for the Defense of Animals) and the Circuito Vegano MCZ. In 2014, he founded The Great Fighter, a vegan fightwear and streetwear brand, and also founded Oxenti Records, a hardcore record label since 2005. His path includes participation in the now extinct Vegan Staff and the 41Crew collective, both in Rio de Janeiro. Klebson is engaged in promoting vegan culture and animal rights in various parts of Brazil through his bold and creative initiatives.
