Shuto Kousoku Trial HD (1080p60) ENG SUB

Restoring this one was a challenge. There are two main problems I encountered while working with this film. First, was the fact that several of the scenes are simply shot out of focus. Second, is how this film was cropped for DVD presentation. Where a normal DVD presents a 16:9 film in widescreen with 720x480 with most of those lines being used. This film had a letterbox treatment. Only about half of the 480 height lines were actually used, basically a VHS amount of pixels. So, long story short I didn't have a lot of lines to sample from and what I did have were not always quality frames. When trying go beyond the limits of the footage you have, upscaling software tries to over sharpen the image leading to horrible face warping and a CGI effect in the image. It is extremely jarring and distracting when trying to watch a film that is a bad upscale. The purpose of this channel is restoration/preservation.  I saw very quickly that trying to restore this to blu ray quality was not going to be possible. So, my goal shifted to preservation.

What I have to present to you is much improved from the DVD alone. However, instead of relying on the upscaling software to do much post processing, I've done almost all cleanup in AviSynth. Then more or less passed that image through to upscaling software to blow up the image to 1080 resolution. I've salvaged a correct 16:9 aspect ratio from the letter boxed version. No part of image is lost but you will notice a thin black bars above and below the image. As always the film was deinterlaced using QTGMC to obtain 60 progressive frames. I hope you all enjoy these as much as I do.
