In today's video we're back in the shed for another Q&A session. Aiden Das Neves has pulled his reel out to sandblast and sharpen but wants to know how to treat the soleplate and the bottom blade (the bedknife).

This simple question is packed with a number of questions so let's pick apart the details.

Firstly, the bedknife must be ground while mounted on the soleplate. This is because the soleplate is not a dependably flat reference surface. By installing the bottom blade on the soleplate and then grinding it, any unevenness is ground out and a straight, sharp edge is achieved.

Yes, it's a lawnmower but both reel and bedknife work together to produce a fine cut. A cylinder mower is a precision lawnmower after all 😉

Secondly, you may want to treat your soleplate as you do the other components of your rebuild. That means stripping it down completely, cleaning it, painting it and putting it back together as it's meant to be.

To achieve this, you'll need to remove the bottom blade. This is a task many find difficult because the screws holding the bottom in place are often tight, rusted and/or seized. An impact driver with a bit sized to the screw head may get you started. The use of a pin punch to drive the screw out is another alternative.

If required, apply heat and, if all else fails, welding a nut to the top of each screw head should do the trick.

The soleplate has a few tricky corners so consider sandblasting to get it nice and tidy. A bit of paint to tidy things up and keep any surface rust off the cast iron is never a bad idea.

The bottom blade itself can also be painted but your grinder may object and you may therefore want to consider masking the cutting edge.

Finally, if you decide replacing a worn or corroded bedknife is required, remember the new blade will also need to be ground--they don't come sharpened. And of course, the new blade must be ground in place on the soleplate 😀

⚠️ Your safety is your responsibility. Don't forget to disconnect your spark plug before starting work on your machine and always read and follow the instructions/labels on your equipment, tools and chemicals. ⚠️

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!
