On 8 September 1944, the highly successful Panzer commander Oberst Dr. Bäke was embroiled in heavy combat with the American 90th Infantry Division of Patton’s Third Army. Bäke’s newly established Panzer-Brigade 106 had been given the task of launching a pre-emptive attack on the Americans before Patton could launch a large-scale attack towards the German border. The Panther’s under Bäke’s command, however, would encounter the Sherman tanks of the 712th Tank Battalion. What followed was a very costly battle near the village of Mairy, in the Lorraine region in France.
