The Kingdom of Nanyue, established in 204 BCE, extended from present-day Guangzhou, China, covering parts of modern Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and northern Vietnam. Founded by Zhao Tuo, a former Qin dynasty general, Nanyue was a melting pot of Han Chinese and indigenous cultures. Its strategic location facilitated trade between China and Southeast Asia, bolstering its economy. The kingdom maintained relative autonomy while acknowledging Han Chinese suzerainty. Nanyue's prosperity was supported by agriculture, metalworking, and maritime commerce. In 111 BCE, the Han dynasty annexed Nanyue, integrating it into the expanding Han Empire. This incorporation led to increased Han cultural influence in the region, laying a foundation for the Sinicization of southern China and northern Vietnam, significantly shaping their historical trajectories.
