I was only planning on discussing how to expand the Dave Smith Mopho x4 with a Tetra module, when I realized it might be interesting to see how the sequencer for the Mopho x4 works, having just looked at the Moog Sub 37 a few weeks earlier.  Checked on line and couldn't find much descriptive info for the sequencer, so here is my effort to explain it a bit.  The manual isn't bad, but there were a few points it could have better explained.

One thing not covered in the video is I don't discuss programming the step sequencer with the available software from Soundtower, though I did play with it a bit off video.

Mopho x4 Sequencer Pluses?
- 4 tracks of sequencer data available per patch (sequences are saved with each patch)
- Those 4 tracks of data can be assigned to a BUNCH of different destinations for modifying programming and performance parameters
- LED displays all the data you're inputting (note value, numerical value, track #, step #, etc)
- Let's you numerically specify the exact BPM for the sequence
- There is semi-effective, free software that lets you program all 4 tracks fairly easily using your computer
- Synchronizes to MIDI timing

Mopho x4 Sequencer Minuses?
- No latch button for the sequencer
- Can't input notes from the keyboard (have to slowly input them one by one, selecting the step with a knob, and then the value with a knob)
- Can't easily tie notes together or change the note duration (not sure if this do-able at all)
- There is a "slew" destination for the sequencer that will supposedly let you slide values between steps, but I was never able to get it to work, and I couldn't find ONE preset sequence that used "slew" (I wanted to find an example to understand exactly how it functioned)

As I mentioned in the Moog Sub 37 Sequencer video, I'm not a big step sequencer type of guy.  Have NEVER used one live that I can recall, and the only time I've used one for recording (only a couple cases probably), I used one of the products in Propellerhead Reason (probably the sequencer in Thor).  That being said, I do DAW-based, MIDI sequencing all the time.

So, even though I'm slightly disappointed with the Mopho x4 step sequencer (especially compared to the Sub 37), it will almost in no way lessen my enjoyment of the synth.  It is SOLIDLY built, sounds great, is fun to play, is fairly easy to program (with only a little bit of shift-clicking and menu diving), and it lets me program my Tetra SO much more easily.  And the frosting on the cake is it combines with the Tetra to make a VERY nice 8-voice analog synth!

Lastly, if anybody has clarification on the Mopho x4 sequencer or important points I've missed, please add in the comments below.  It's all about letting us folks better understand and use the stuff we buy or want to buy...

Cheers!
