In 1995, with Seagram’s new ownership of Universal Studios, Matt Stone and Trey Parker (of South Park fame) were commissioned by comedic filmmaker David Zucker to create a comedy short film. This nearly 14-minute film, "Your Studio and You," was shown exclusively at an employee event and featured several A-list celebrities.

The film parodies the style of 1950s educational films like "Duck and Cover" (1952), humorously poking fun at Universal and its talent. It was filmed on the Universal Studios lot.

We included a talk that the Paley Center for Media did in 2000 with Matt Stone and Trey Parker as they explained how it came to be.

Universal Studio History

AEager to expand the company's broadcast and cable presence, longtime MCA head Lew Wasserman sought a wealthy partner and found one in Japanese electronics manufacturer Matsushita Electric (now known as Panasonic), which agreed to acquire MCA for $6.6 billion in 1990.

Although Matsushita provided a significant cash infusion, cultural differences proved insurmountable. Five years later, Matsushita sold an 80% stake in MCA/Universal to Canadian drinks distributor Seagram for $5.7 billion. Seagram aimed to build an entertainment empire around Universal and acquired PolyGram and other entertainment properties in 1999. However, Hollywood's unpredictable profits did not match the reliable income from their previously held DuPont shares.

Seagram head Edgar Bronfman Jr. sold Universal's television holdings, including cable network USA, to Barry Diller to raise funds. In June 2000, Seagram was sold to the French water utility and media company Vivendi, which owned StudioCanal; the conglomerate then became known as Vivendi Universal.

Burdened with debt, Vivendi Universal sold 80% of Vivendi Universal Entertainment (including the studio and theme parks) to General Electric (GE), the parent company of NBC, in 2004. The resulting media super-conglomerate was renamed NBCUniversal.

Universal Pictures (legally Universal City Studios LLC, also known as Universal Studios, or simply Universal; formerly Universal Film Manufacturing Company and Universal-International Pictures Inc.) is an American film production and distribution company owned by Comcast through the NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment division of NBCUniversal.
