If the entire thyroid gland is removed, thyroid hormone replacement is necessary after the operation and it will be  continue for life long. If half of the thyroid gland has been removed, the remaining half will most likely secrete enough hormones for you and you will not need to hormon repalcement. In my operations, I try to protect the thyroid tissue as much as possible for my patients no need to hormon replacement therapy for life long.
