By the 1960s cargo carrying on Britain’s canals had almost ceased. But only a few had so far discovered them for leisure boating.
Arcturus had been built as a freight carrier, later the cargo space was modified for passengers, and a canopy provided for their protection from rain. With a length of 70 feet and beam of 7 feet, the rear of the boat remained essentially unaltered with a boatman’s living cabin astern of the (diesel) engine room.
The cabin could be heated by a small stove, the chimney of which is prominent. Also on the cabin top is the can intended for drinking water. These items are decorated in the traditional style, as is the cabin exterior.
Operation of the locks has always been by the boat crew who carry operating handles, referred to as “windlasses” for the purpose.
