In this detailed and candid interview with Dr Vijay Rana, India's former prime minister Morarji Desai talks about his early political life and then goes on to tell us how, in 1963, he was eliminated from the line of succession of Jawaharlal Nehru through Kamraj Plan. He says the ultimate aim of the Kamraj Plan was to make way for Indira Gandhi. He says that it was Motilal Nehru who wanted his son Jawaharlal to succeed him as Congress president. As for the break up of the Janata Party, he accepts that that bringing Charan Singh, who had earlier resigned, back into his cabinet was a mistake. He re-entered the government determined to break the ruling Janata Party.

This interview was conducted by Dr Vijay Rana in June 1985 at Morarji Desai's sea-facing 5th-floor apartment at Marine Drive in Mumbai.
