A quick test between handheld VS shoulder rig VS steadicam VS glidecam with your DSLR camera.  This test will give you an idea of how stable your video footage will look when filming with different camera stabilization devices.  A steadicam test, a shoulder rig test, a handheld test, and a glidecam test.

Even though most DSLRs are small & light-weight, they're also incredibly sensitive to movement.  Even at a slow walk, shooting with a handheld DSLR can be shaky and unstable.

Shoulder rigs can help eliminate many of the tiny, "micro shakes" you get when shooting handheld.  However, when filming with a shoulder rig, don't expect any miracles --  you're still going to get shakes, wobbles, and instability in your footage, depending on how quickly and steadily you're moving.

Steadicams and glidecams will give you the most stability when shooting a tracking or moving shot with your DSLR.  However, steadicams and glidecams have longer setup times and require practice and skill to use properly.

Before deciding on what video equipment to buy, remember that shoulder rigs are not meant to be replacements or substitutes for steadicams.  Steadicams and shoulder rigs are different tools that produce very different looks.  Steadicams produce smoother, more free-flowing shots; while shoulder rigs produce rougher, more action-oriented or documentary-style footage.   It's important to consider these differences -- as well as the kind of look you're going for - before settling on a particular device.
