Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance, suggested that the UK could be the "first truly Islamist country" to obtain nuclear weapons following Labour's election victory.

Vance, a 39-year-old former venture capitalist and senator from Ohio, was picked as Trump's vice-presidential candidate just days after an assassination attempt on Trump.

Vance, who previously called Trump an "idiot" and "America's Hitler," made the remarks at the National Conservatism conference in Washington DC, attended by former home secretary Suella Braverman.

In a widely circulated video, Vance said, "I have to beat up on the UK. A friend and I discussed nuclear proliferation and realized that with Labour's win, maybe the UK is the first truly Islamist country to get a nuclear weapon."
