Girdwood in September: Vistas from the Alyeska Aerial Tram

Scattered in a forested area 36 miles (58 km.) southeast of Anchorage, AK, Girdwood is a rural mixture of vacation and year-round homes. During the winter season, the sea-borne deep powder snow that blankets the many ski runs on Mount Alyeska attracts avid winter sports enthusiasts who fill the nearby condominiums and the impressive Alyeska Resort hotel.

During the summer months, the Aerial Tram from the Alyeska Resort operates as a sightseeing ride, taking tourists 2000 ft.  (610 m.) up Mount Alyeska.  From the upper terminal, the panoramic inland view includes the Chugach Mountains with several hanging glaciers, while the seaward view reveals the Turnagain Arm, and misty mountain ranges of the Chugach National Forest.
