In 1973 the cornerstone for
In 1973 the cornerstone for the "Palast der Republik" is laid. The palace was built in the 70s, on the land, once owned by the Prussian kings.
Till 1976, the GDR parliament meets in the Palace of the Republic until it was opened for the public as a " House of the people".
Celebrities such as "Fidel Castro", "Udo Lindenberg" a West-Berlin singer, and many more, come to visit the "Palazzo Prozzo", as it was called by the public.
With 1.2 billion marks, the palace is the most expensiv building in East Berlin. White marble was laid and more than 10,000 ball lights where hung.
But immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the palace is closed with the reason of asbestos danger.
On the 6th of february in 2006 the former Palace of the Republic is destroyed. The entire demolition takes place between the years of 2006 and 2008.
