വർഷം 1527. മെക്സിക്കൻ ഉൾക്കടലിലൂടെ നർവൈസും, കബേസ ദെ വാക്കായും ഫ്ലോറിഡ ലക്ഷ്യമാക്കി യാത്ര തുടങ്ങിയ സമയം. അങ്ങ് തെക്ക് കൊളംബിയയിലെ ഒരു നദിയുടെ അഴിമുഖത്ത് മറ്റൊരു പ്രശസ്തനായ സ്പാനിഷ് കോൺക്വിസ്റ്റഡോർ ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ നിൽപ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. സാക്ഷാൽ ഫ്രാൻസിസ്‌കോ പിസാറോ. അങ്ങകലെ കടൽത്തീരത്തോട് ചേർന്ന് സാമാന്യം വലിപ്പമുള്ള ഒരു പത്തേമാരി സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ചകണ്ട് പിസാറോക്ക് അത്ഭുതമായി. വളരെ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ ആ ബോട്ടിനെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ച പിസാറോക്ക് തന്റെ കണ്ണുകളെ വിശ്വസിക്കാനായില്ല. തെക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിൽ തന്നെ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ബാൽസാ (Balsa) തടികൾകൊണ്ടാണ് ആ ബോട്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കൈകൊണ്ട് തുന്നിയെടുത്ത കോട്ടൺ തുണികൊണ്ടാണ് പായകൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. രണ്ട് പായ്മരങ്ങളുള്ള ആ ബോട്ടിൽ നിറയെ തെക്കേ അമെരിക്കൻ നേറ്റിവ് ഗോത്രക്കാരാണ് ഉള്ളത്. ഇത് തന്നെയാണ് പിസാറോയെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തിയതും. തന്റെ ഇതുവരെയുള്ള അറിവിൽ ഒരൊറ്റ തെക്കേ അമെരിക്കൻ വംശക്കാർക്കും ഇത്തരം ബോട്ടുകൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കുവാനോ അത് നിയന്ത്രിക്കുവാനോ അറിയില്ല. .........
