Karen Lee Andrews - Between The Sheets (cover)

Karen Lee Andrews is an Oceanic Blues musician. Oceania’s narrative tradition and the introduction of American Blues, Soul and Gospel since the 1960s, has shaped this distinctive style. The roots of the sound are gritty guitar, glowing valves, lush tremolo and deep reverb in a distinctively fluid Oceanic expression. This unique sound carries the mood and tones of Oceania expressed in rich, warm vocals.

The wave of American music that impacted the region in the 1960s coincided an upsurge of migration to American and Australian cities as 1 in 5 Islanders far from home, working endless hours to support their families back home add their unique flavour to the Blues.

Oceania describes the thousands of islands that are scattered throughout the Pacific Ocean, spanning from Australia across to the south, as far as Hawaii. The region is best known for its warm tropical climate, an abundance of beaches, active volcanoes and coastal living. Oceania is steeped in ancient customs of oratory, dance and music, passed down from generation to generation. Each island is unique, while its close ties have created shared values.

Cameron Adams, from the Herald Sun, says, “Ms Andrews has one of those authentic sounds you hear, even through the gloss of TV, you can tell she has lived and loved.”

When you think of Texas Blues, you think of Stevie Ray Vaughan or Chicago Blues, Buddy Guy or John Lee Hooker, the king of Detroit Blues. Every branch of Blues is inspired by a city or region and is embodied by an iconic artist who captures the soul of the music.

Paul Sheehan from Sydney Morning Herald states, “She is one of the most original and dignified talents to emerge in Australian popular entertainment in a long time. She manages to be both imperial yet vulnerable “.

Having spent time away from the music seen, Karen has reconnected with her guitar, hitting new strides with a new style, that can only be described as, Oceanic Blues. In a church hall

Karen discovered the depths of her voice as a young woman, she dedicated herself to gospel hymns and was called upon to lead the church band as music director.  The duty was a natural fit:  growing up around her mother’s large Polynesian family had instilled in her the role of music in bringing people together. The responsibility also became, in large part, Karen’s musical education. In charge of delivering a moving hymn from a group of players and singers with varied abilities, she herself needed to know the ins and outs of piano and guitar, leads and backing harmonies. Karen had to know how to get the best from every instrument, every singer. To do so, Ms Andrews called upon the music she loved as a young girl: Soul and Gospel.  In the crowded Andrews family home in Koonawarra, a young Karen listened to her brother’s Motown records and to the satin voice of Stevie Wonder.  Singing along to those golden hits, and to traditional Polynesian songs, was simply part of everyday family life.  This would become the foundation of her original style – Oceanic Blues.
