Thinking of getting a new fish? Set up a quarantine tank! Even if you've never used one before, they don't have to be super complicated or take up a lot of space in your house or office. For small fish, a ten gallon tank would be fine - I'm using a 20 gallon for a very small Copperband Butterflyfish that I recently purchased.

New fish are exciting! With a quarantine tank you can be sure they're healthy and settled into your routine before introducing them to the rest of your fish in your reef tank. Anything can be a quarantine tank - everything from a small aquarium to a brute trashcan. Just pick something that fits the needs of your fish.

I expect that my Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) will be in my quarantine tank for quite some time, it's picking at the rocks - rubble that I had put in my display reef tank to seed with life - but I've yet to see it eat anything I actually put in. I do think it's eating.. but I want to see it do better before I stress it with the tank transfer method or things like that. Everything that you do in a QT should have the fish's best health and care in mind - you're responsible for their care, and the nice thing about a quarantine tank is that you can really do whatever it takes in that tank without affecting the things in your main reef.

This video came out a little dark. Sorry about that! One of my 2021 goals is to finally build a cover for my tank. Right now it's open to the air, which poses two potential issues - fish can jump out, so no Anthias or things like that, and the light spills out, which causes issues with my camera. I usually use a super high tech bit of cardboard to block the light from the aquarium while filming - but like most things you have to remember to move every time it's easy to forget to get the cardboard in place.
