"We are afraid of being displaced again because we do not trust the Jews and Israel. They told us the south is safe, and we were displaced from the north to the south to safety. We came to the south to safety but we found death and blood waiting for us and waiting for our sons, daughters, and relatives. We found death in front of us. We did not find safety as they said. For us, if we knew there was death, we would have stayed in the north.”

STORYLINE:
Displaced Palestinians sheltering in tents in southern Gaza, say living conditions are unbearable and that they are living among venomous insects.

Having fled the fighting, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have arrived in Muwasi, a coastal strip of land Israel has designated as Gaza’s lone safe zone.

But the site lacks basic facilities including toilets and easy access to clean drinking water.

“People are hungry, there is no food, no drink, no clothes,” said Mahmoud Shaheen, originally displaced from Jabaliya in northern Gaza.

Most of the displaced people in Muwasi are crammed into nylon tents, often home to whole families.

The arrival of the summer heat risks the outbreak of deadly diseases.

“The water we drink is polluted, we wish for a little clean water, even when we drink it, it is hot,” said Mariama Shaheen, a relative of Mahmoud's.

Over 37,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.

The war erupted on Oct. 7. When Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel and killed some 1, 200 people and kidnapped around 250 others.
