Single Acting Cylinder
     In single acting cylinder there is only one port to supply pressurized fluid. The output shaft also known as rod connected to the piston is spring loaded for producing reverse stroke. When pressurized oil is introduced into the cylinder the piston is pushed in the opposite direction and the output shaft comes out of the cylinder by compressing the spring. To reverse the direction of the output shaft, pressure supply to the cylinder is stopped and the actuator port is connected to the reservoir. This is done by a two way direction control valve. As input pressure is stopped the spring recoils back by pushing the piston in the reverse direction and oil in the cylinder is diverted to the reservoir through the same port. In case of pneumatic system air from the cylinder is vented out to the atmosphere without recirculation. Two way direction control valve is used with single acting cylinder for producing forward and reverse strokes.
     Output shaft is also called output rod.
     The movement by which the output shaft or rod extends out of the cylinder is referred as forward stroke.
     The movement by which output shaft retracts into the cylinder is referred as reverse stroke.
     The output rod is provided with rod end eye for connecting with the end equipment.
