Was the Texas Lotto bought out?
In April of 2023, there was a $95 million dollar lottery jackpot won in Colleyville, TX. It was the largest lottery jackpot in North America at the time and the third largest in Lotto Texas history. However, some people are saying that this jackpot was bought out.
In fact, the majority of the combinations were purchased for the drawing with the top 10 retailers being purchasing groups. Dawn Nettles, known as the watchdog of the Texas lottery spoke with podcaster Timothy Schultz about some of her thoughts on this drawing. She believes that it was likely bought out.
The store that sold the winning ticket called Hooked on MT recently became a licensed lottery retailer. It also happens to own the lotto courier app, Mido Lotto. This location sold nearly $11 million in tickets for this drawing, which was the highest in the state. The President and Co-founder of Lottery Now, Inc. told Timothy Schultz that the ticket was purchased in person rather than through their app.
Who won this $95 million jackpot? We may never know. Lottery winners can remain anonymous in Texas for prizes of $1 million dollars or more.
However, a single ticket holder came forward to claim the prize on July 1st on behalf of a partnership entity known as Rook TX LP. It's an entity based in New Jersey. The winner chose the cash value of the prize, which comes to $57.8 million dollars before taxes.
Was the Texas Lotto bought out? Here is an interesting fact: it would cost approximately $25.8 million dollars to purchase all combinations for the Texas Lotto. The top 4 retailers for this drawing accounted for right around $25.8 million dollars. It wasn't necessarily the same purchaser at these retailers, but theoretically if you did purchase all combinations for this drawing and were the only winner, you would earn tens of millions of dollars.
