This video is a part of our series to explain the FAQ’s recently posted by National Medical Commission on their website. This video tries to explain the similarities and differences between FMGE Act 2002 and Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate- 2021. The degree of students was considered valid for students under FMGE Act 2002 if the degree was valid in the country of study. While under Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate- 2021, the student should get registered or should be competent enough to register himself/herself in the country of study and the degree should be at par with the local students. Under FMGE Act 2002, internship done from 4 countries viz China, Nepal, Philippines and Bangladesh is considered valid. But under FMGL-2021, internship is to be done twice, one in the country of study and other in India after qualifying NEXT exam. Course duration is increased by 1 year. FMGE Act 2002 does not limit the duration of degree completion while FMGL-2021 the degree should be completed within 10 years from the date on which admission is sought. Internship should be completed within 2 years of qualifying NEXT. FMGE Act 2002 does not restrict the medium of instruction during study while FMGL 2021 clearly states the medium of instruction to be English. FMGE Act 2002 permitted transfers to other intuitions while FMGL 2021 does not allow transfers during the course of study and internship. FMGL 2021 also states that clerkship is different from internship. Clerkship or clinical rotations during the 54 months of study is a part of student’s education and internship should be taken after the completion of education.
Both the acts have a similar say on the validation of online classes of theoretical subjects for students studying MBBS abroad. However, students will have to complete practical sessions and clerkship once the classes are resumed. Also the certificate of completion of practical sessions has to be presented.
