STORYLINE:
An elite squad of Afghan troops trained by Italian forces to protect ex-king Mohammad Zahir Shah were put through their paces this week.
Authorities are hoping the 86-year-old king's presence will help restore stability to the country.
The 59-strong team is charged with protecting the king, who returned to Afghanistan a fortnight ago, ending 29 years in exile.
While the king has no formal role in the interim administration in Kabul, he is widely seen as a unifying force in a country wrecked by more than two decades of fighting.
His return was delayed after mounting concerns over his security.
Next month he opens the grand tribal council - known as the Loya Jirga - which will determine how Afghanistan will be run in future.
Equipped with new weapons and crisp uniforms, the elite squad was trained by an anti-terrorist branch of Italy's Carabinieri paramilitary police from Italy.
