Trams are part of the experience of visiting Istanbul, being one of the best means of transport in the city. There are several lines and routes, but tram T3 (Kadikoy-Moda nostalgic tram line) is the one of the most iconic, taking you on a lovely ride to see lots of historical and architectural heritage sites of the city.
Compared to Istanbul’s European side, Kadıköy has a more relaxed vibe, which can be experienced on the Kadiköy-Moda Nostaljik Tramway. The red wagon might look like a museum artefact, but the tram line still runs and is widely used as everyday transportation. Get on the tram by the ferries, and let it take you along Bahariye Caddesi and through the colourful architecture of Moda. The line only lasts 10 stops in a 2.6km (1.6mi) circular loop, perfect for getting a sense of the scenery.
It looks and feels like museum tram normally do but you soon realize that it is just another alternative to cars or walking for the neighbourhood population.
Kadikoy-Moda Tram Line has 11 stations within a system of 2.6 km network. With 4 tramcars in operation, Kadikoy-Moda Tram Line starts from Kadikoy Square, follows the reserved bus lane and reaches Bahariye Street, and finally arrives back to Kadikoy Square via Moda Street.
Although it partially follows the former tram line no. 20, the line completes its roundtrip by passing through Kadikoy Square, Altiyol and Bahariye Streets, Moda Primary School and Moda Street, and finally arriving before the IDO pier in Kadikoy. On a unidirectional shuttle line, the system provides heritage tram operations with Tatra GT6 tramcars procured from Germany. Since the operation uses the route of the old no 20 tram line with nostalgic cars, it is also named as the Heritage Tram Line. All maintenance, repair and revision works of these cars are being made at the tram maintenance line near Kadıköy-IDO Station.
