It’s no secret that your health outcomes in America is often influenced by where you live. For people with diabetes, the reality is starker. Every four minutes an American with diabetes undergoes surgery to lose a limb, but it’s even more frequent if you are Black and live in a state like Mississippi, which ranks among the lowest for health access and outcomes. Cardiologist Dr. Foluso Fakorede calls this “the amputation lottery,” which why he has made it his mission to save patients from devastating losses, while calling national attention to what he views as one of the worst health justice crises of our times. This is episode 3 of the second season of Walgreens “In Our Words” series documenting the most urgent issues of health equity affecting major portions of the US population.
