San Diego was honored today with a visit by former President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower. They arrived by car late this afternoon at the El Cortez hotel having driven from Palm Springs. There was a big crowd waiting to catch a glimpse of the famous twosome. Ike was deeply tanned, and wore a grey suit, no hat. Mamie wore a two-piece tweed suit with belted jacket…black straw pillbox hat with flowers. Eisenhower is chairman of the Freedoms Foundation and will speak briefly tonight on that subject at the El Cortez where they’ll spend the night. They went directly to their room, but as they passed through the lobby Harold Keen managed to speak briefly with Ike.
San Diego and the Uplifter’s Club turned out en masse Friday night to pay respects and honors to former President Dwight Eisenhower. With the Marine band playing, 1300 guests gave the general a standing ovation at the El Cortez banquet room. The flags of all 50 states were presented by a detail from the Naval Training Center. Uplifter C. Arnholt Smith presented Mamie Eisenhower a portrait of Ike in oils painted by San Diego artist D. Wayne Milsap. Then for Mr. Eisenhower to the Boy Scouts, Smith handed over a check from the San Diego Uplifters in the amount of 55 thousand dollars. The banquet was also a tribute to Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge of which Ike is chairman and Paul Terry, former San Diegan, a vice-president. General O’Daniel introduced Ike.

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower had an informal breakfast meeting with friends today before motoring back to his Palm Desert winter home. He spoke last night at the Uplifters Club’s semi-annual banquet. Mr. Eisenhower said the morale of the citizenry is the backbone to economic and military strength in the United States. Before leaving San Diego, he spoke with Harold Keen at the El Cortez.
