Optical mineralogy calcite variable relief

Calcite in plane polarized and cross polarized light, showing variable relief against quartz (plane polarized light) - note variable darkness of grain boundary in center of field of view. In cross-polarized light, calcite shows high interference colors and twins. Quartz shows typical black-white colors in cross-polars.
