Konrad Zuse (22 June 1910 -- 18 December 1995) was a German civil engineer, inventor and computer pioneer. He created the first really functional computer Z1 in his parents' living room in 1936 to 1938, and it is considered to be the first electro-mechanical binary programmable (modern) computer. His greatest achievement was the world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer, the Z3, which became operational in May 1941. Thanks to this machine and its predecessors, Zuse
