Today Iran holds about 10 percent of the total global oil reserves due to its unique position in terms of hydrocarbon reserves. Iran is endowed with 157 billion barrels of oils in its proven reserves. Current exploration projects will lead to a considerable increase in the Iran’s oil and gas reserves. Presently, there are 62 on shore oil fields and 16 offshore oil fields. About 26 percent of these reserves are located across Iran’s common borders with its neighbors.
